Science: A Light Lesson!

By Kendall, Kayla, Nick, and Scarlet
(This post never got out last school year, but Mrs. Yollis promised to publish it over the summer!)
FACT:
Light is a form of energy, and it travels in a straight line.

We learned three new vocabulary words for science, and they are
transparent, translucent, and opaque.
✵     ✵     ✵     ✵     ✵

Transparent means light goes through the object.

These black arrows are light. They go right through the transparent surface.

This jar is transparent.

Translucent means some light goes through the object.

The arrows represent light. Notice, the light is scattered
Scattered means to go in different directions.

Here is a picture of some translucent shapes.

Opaque
means it blocks all of the light.

The arrows represent light. Notice, NO light goes through the opaque object!

Here is a picture of our opaque shadow puppets.

✵     ✵     ✵     ✵     ✵

Can you think of any objects that are translucent, transparent, or opaque?

Have you ever made opaque shadow puppets?

  1. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

Working on this post was very fun. I liked taking the picture when Kayla and I did shadow puppets.

If it weren't for you, we would have never have learned all of this.

I miss you a lot! I'll see you when school starts back up again.

    Sincerely,
    Kendall

  3. Dear Kendall, Kayla, Nick and Scarlet,

Well done on a great post! My students will be interested to read this as they are really enjoying their science unit of work this term!

Here are some objects I thought of...

transparent the glass I am drinking out of right now.

translucent the blind in my living room.

opaque the tights I am wearing were called opaque tights.

I hope you are all looking forward to fourth grade!

  4. Dear Kendall,Kayla,Nick and Scarlet,
You all did a awesome experiment
explaing Translucent, Transparent and Opaque. 2KM has done a couple of science experiments which I really like doing. Maybe mum and I will do this one at home.

I have an exmaple for Translucent large bottle of water. Transparent cellophane paper and Opaque my black jumper.

    From Bianca.

PS Wacky Bands are selling in Austrila. :D

  5. @ Miss. McGeady,

Thanks for such a nice comment!

I agree that your students will enjoy this this post because as you said your students will be interested once they read this post, and I think that it's educational.

Great examples of transparent, translucent, and opaque!

    Sincerely,
    Kayla ;)

  6. Dear Kendall, Kayla, Nick and Scarlet, and Mrs Yollis,
Absolutely agree that this should get the recognition it deserves by being published, what a great lesson, its not something that we're currently covering in the next few weeks but its something that if we were covering then I could direct our students to learn about it, from the other side of the world! (Well nearly, New Zealand).

Can't wait to see more work from your 'new' class Mrs Yollis!

  7. @ Mrs. Yollis,

My grandparents are great. Thanks for asking. My mom and dad are going to Hawii for a week in a couple of weeks, and my grandma and grandpa are watching us. I'll make sure they comment.

    Yours truly,
    Kendall

    P.S. I can't wait until school starts!

What a fantastic idea for a lesson on light. I don't teach this lesson in Grade 5 but I could incorperate it into an Art lesson. Well done - fantastic!

  9. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

This post made me learn a lot about science (light). From this post I learned that when ever you have a light or a shadow, and put closer to whatever you reflect it of to the light or shadow gets bigger, and when you go farther away it gets smaller. I like making shadow puppets at home, it's really fun.

Thanks for teaching me about light.

    Your pal,
    Scarlet
