Learn to Write a Compound Sentence!

Mrs. Yollis' class is always trying to improve their writing skills.

*     *     *     *     *
 A compound sentence:
  1. Combines two shorter sentences (so has TWO subjects)
  2. Joins the two sentences with  a conjunction (and, or, but)
*     *     *     *     *
Here are some quality compound sentences using the words Olympics or reflection.
    (Two spelling words.)

Jaxon:  My brother, Jordan, went to the Olympics, and he bought me a pair of red maple leaf mittens.

Sam: The Olympics had magnificent actions, and I hope Team U.S.A. dominates the other teams.

Kate: You see your reflection when you look into a still, flat pool, and you can also see yourself when you look into a pond.

Richie:  This morning I saw Shaun White snowboarding, and he is a participant of the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics.

Jared:  At the Olympics, I am cheering for my country, and the host country of the Olympics is Canada.

Ayush:  I am excited because the Olympics have started, and Shaun White from Team U.S.A. won gold!

Kendall:  The Winter Olympics take place in Vancouver, and many athletes come to compete there.

Kayla:  I think the Olympics are really cool because it's fun watching all the exciting tricks they're performing, and I'm rooting for Team U.S.A.

Many of the compound sentences used the word...Olympics.

Readers can leave a comment about the outstanding compound sentences, or  they can comment about the Olympics.
(Hey, that's a compound sentence using the conjunction OR!)

Challenge: Try to use a compound sentence in your comment!  :-)

    1. Dear Mrs. Yollis' students,

Wow! The sentences you wrote were very good, and I like how each sentence was a different color.

Many students wrote about the word reflection, but I don't have a mirror so I've never seen my reflection.

Tonight I am going to watch the Super G, or I will tune in for the hockey game.

      Have a great weekend!

    2. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

I extremely enjoyed reading all of the compound sentences! (I especially like my compound sentence because I said why I thought it was really cool, and I said witch team I'm rooting for, team U.S.A.) I like Sam's sentence too because he used a lot of high level vocabulary.

I'm going to watch the Olympics tonight, and see who's going to win the gold metal!

      Yours truly,
      Kayla :)

P.S. We have 20 medals! The numbers of gold and silver are six, and we have eight bronze metals.

    3. @ Kayla,

You have become an outstanding commenter, and I am very proud of your effort!

It is difficult for me to choose which compound sentence is the best, but I think your sentence is very impressive.

Thanks for being a great contributor!

    4. Dear Mrs. Yollis' class,

I am so impressed with the student's compound sentences and I share their enthusiasm for the Olympics! Although I do not ski the Super G, ice skate or luge, it is amazing to watch world class athletes from all countries compete.

      Have a great weekend.

    5. @ Mrs. Levy,

I noticed that your sentence was a compound, and we love that you made that effort!

Usually I only watch ice skating, snowboarding, and skiing, but this year I have been following a little hockey as well.

You have a great weekend too!

    6. Dear Mrs Yollis and Grade 3 students,
Your compound sentences are excellent, so I'll be sure to share them with my grade tomorrow.I know that they'll be impressed too.
Thankyou for leaving a comment on our blog. As you can see, I'm just learning about blogging, but I'm very lucky to have Riley to teach me.
I liked your idea about sharing the books you've been reading, so I might 'borrow' that idea for our blog. We've been enjoying reading'Fantastic Mr Fox'.
      Best wishes,
      Mrs de Vries

    7. @ Mrs. de Vries,

Thanks so much for your compliment about our compound sentences. We have been working on that skill for a while, and many of my students now understand how to write them.

I think you will really enjoy blogging. My advice is to work at your own pace. Maybe set a goal for yourself of a post a week or something. Riley is a fantastic blogger and will be able to help in many ways. :-)

Have fun with your Fantastic Mr. Fox post! That sounds like fun!

      Thanks again,
      Mrs. Yollis

    8. Hi Mrs. Yollis! I am a student from Mrs. Braidwood' class. Your students did a pretty good job with their compound sentences. The USA did a pretty good job in a lot of Olympic events! Canada also did better then they ever have. We set a record for the most gold medals in an Olympics with 14! But the Canadians didn't stand a chance against Shaun White.

    9. Dear Mrs. Yollis' class,

      I love the compound sentences!!!

When the Olympics were on, I turned on the TV right away because I wanted to watch the USA win all of the Gold medals.

Even though all the sentences are great, my favorite compound sentence is Jared's because he used great adjectives. The people who read this blog will be satisfied with the spectacular sentences.

By the way, did you know that we have 20 medals? A lot of them are from speed skating. I think that writing compound sentences is fascinating!!!

      Best Wishes,
      Andy From Mrs. Ranney's Class

    12. Hi Ms. Yollis,
I'm a k-5 tech teacher in Astoria, NY. I'm beginning to explore skype. Do you skype? If so, would you be interested in working out a skype project with my class? If not, could we perhaps blog? Thanks
      Linda
