Internet Weather Day Project!

By Taylor S. and James

Today Mrs.Yollis' and Mrs. Ranney's classes participated in an Internet weather project sponsored by Switlik Elementary School in Jackson, New Jersey. There were 24 classes involved, including four international schools.

At exactly 12:00 P.M. on February 17, we went outside to discover what the weather was like.

The sky was partly cloudy.
(Who can name that cloud type in the comment section?)

Students paired up to read their thermometers. The temperature was between 64˚ and 65˚F.

Although the air seemed still, we were able to get a reading on the wind meter.

The white ball registered approximately 2.5 m.p.h.

It had rained cats and dogs over the long Presidents' Day weekend,

but the rain gauge was dry.

In preparation for the big day,

students charted all the U. S. school locations. We used the big map for the international schools.

LinkStudents learned about weather from some links on Mrs. Yollis' Website.

Many students played on this link to create a weather map.

Our weather data was sent to Switlik Elementary School, and they will post the results on their website.

We will look forward to comparing the unique weather!

Here are the results!

Here are the pictures sent in from all the participants.

  1. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

I think the cloud in the picture is a cirrus cloud.:-)

  2. Looks like Cumulus Clouds to us!
After seeing the blue sky in the background,
we predict the weather to be sunny tomorrow.

    Thanks for sharing,
    Taylor & Rae (Taylor's mom)

  3. Dear Class,
That was a lot of fun today! I was so surprised when we got the air speed reading. It didn't seem like the wind was blowing at all!

I can't wait to see the data. I wonder where the coldest temperature was? Probably not Australia!

    You're great!

What a great job on your weather report. Can you tell me why the rain gauge was dry after all that rain? I'm curious.
    Thanks

  5. I remember learning about clouds when I was in school- so my guess is they are cumulus clouds!
I was wondering how your found Switlik school on the internet?
    What state is it in?
Is their school bigger or smaller than Chaparral?

    Shane's Mom

  6. Dear Mrs.Fausner,

Thanks for asking a great question!

Every day our class empties the rain gauge. That's why the rain gauge was dry. It did rain on Tuesday, but the amount was minuscule.

    Thanks
    Taylor S., Sean, and James

  7. The Weather Day information looks great! Switlik Elementary, which hosted the project, is located in Jackson, NJ. We are about the same distance from New York City and Philadelphia and about 30 minutes from the ocean. We are also home to Six Flags Great Adventure. Switlik is a K-5 school with 940 students. We were very happy to have a school from the west coast participate. So thanks Chaparral! Mrs. Hartman & Mrs. Knigge's 4th Grade
