Your "random" question is a...Hi Kostaki,

Your "random" question is a great one and very appropriate to ask someone from Wisconsin, especially someone from Wisconsin who worked for a cheese company for over 20 years!

It is very hard to choose a favorite cheese because I like all kinds. However, if I had to choose only one, I would choose Cheddar cheese. I like mild, medium, and aged Cheddar and really like a specialty blend called Chipotle Cheddar, which is Cheddar cheese with chipotle peppers in it. It really spices up a sandwich!

Not everyone likes eating plain cheese. That's not weird at all! Having cheese on a burger is a great way to add a little extra flavor not to mention protein and calcium to your burger.

Yes, I am staying with my grandkids. Unfortunately, my two weeks in California are over so I will be flying home to Wisconsin on Tuesday. It's been a great visit! I especially enjoyed meeting you and your classmates.

I like traveling and find flying to be an adventure. Have you ever been on an airplane? I feel that fall has the best weather because it can be hot and cold too.

A few days ago my mom and I went on a four mile walk (we jogged a bit too). When I got home I was very tired but I was also proud. Though I’m still visiting in California, I do keep track of the temperature in Wisconsin. Today it was about 57 degrees in the part of Wisconsin I live in. That is quite a bit cooler than the temperature today in California which I believe was around 88 degrees!

Yes, I will look forward to returning to Wisconsin next week so I can enjoy the cool, fall weather and see how much the trees have changed in color since I left. The hardest part about going home is I will really miss being with my grandchildren every day. If I could just move California closer to Wisconsin, that would be perfect!

So you’ve heard about my cookies from Troy! I do enjoy baking cookies. Since I’ve been in California I’ve made chocolate chip and oatmeal raisin cookies. Troy has found a new recipe in a magazine for a pecan cookie that he and I are going to experiment with tomorrow after school.

One of my favorite cookies to make are called cut-out cookies. They are a sugar cookie where you roll out the cookie dough and then “cut-out” different shapes. Do you see where the name “cut-out” cookies comes from?

I have lots of different shapes of cookie cutters. Most are Christmas shapes but I also have a pumpkin for Halloween, a shamrock for St. Patrick’s Day, and my all time favorite cookie cutter is in the shape of the state of Wisconsin! That one makes a pretty big cookie so my grandkids really like that one!

I would be happy to share cookie recipes with your Mom. Troy’s Mom has most of my cookie recipes, too.

Do you have a favorite type of cookie? Do you ever make cookies with your Mom?

Your blogging buddy,
Barb (Troy’s Grandma from Wisconsin) aka Grandma BarbBarbnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2633466533683944100.post-46398006168115966762015-10-01T20:16:36.042-07:002015-10-01T20:16:36.042-07:00Hi Ari,

It was right after the astronauts landed on the moon and brought back a moon rock. I remember being very impressed with seeing the moon rock at the Air and Space Museum.

I liked all of the museums and monuments in Washington, DC. I think I could spend a month in Washington, DC and still not have seen everything. Perhaps sometime I will go there again as there are new memorials there for our veterans that were not there when I first visited.

Have you gone to any museums in California?

With my grandchildren, I have visited and really enjoyed the Peterson Automotive Museum and the Natural History Museum in Los Angeles and President Reagan’s library in Simi Valley. Spending time with cousins you don’t get to see often and doing it at the beach sounds like lots of fun!

My Thanksgiving tradition is to spend time with my family and make a delicious Thanksgiving dinner. My Mom is 87 and lives in a city about an hour and half north of where I live. I always go to my Mom’s house and we make Thanksgiving dinner together. We share dinner with any of my relatives who can make it. After dinner, we sometimes play cards or go to visit my aunts, uncles, and cousins who live in the same city as my Mom.

Thanksgiving is all about being thankful for what we have so it seems fitting for both you and me to spend that special day with our families!

I am curious about the seashells and rocks you collect at the beach. Do you do anything special with them?

This summer when my grandson, Troy, and his family were visiting me in Wisconsin, we went to a nearby state park and heard a gentleman give a fascinating talk about looking for and collecting rocks. He told us that people who are rock collectors are called Rock Hounds. He was wearing a T-shirt that had a huge picture of a Hound dog on it surrounded by rocks. His silly shirt helped me to remember he was a Rock Hound.

SIncerely,
Barb (Troy’s Grandma from Wisconsin) aka Grandma BarbBarbnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2633466533683944100.post-5173343470632642872015-09-29T20:31:50.248-07:002015-09-29T20:31:50.248-07:00Dear Mrs. Yollis,

I can see you have both already learnt lots about quality commenting from Mrs Yollis.

We start school at 9.00am and our school day ends at 3.30pm. We are currently on school holidays. We go back for term four (our final term) next week.

It can be tricky to know what to wear due to the unpredictable weather we experiences at times. I would say our popular phrase about Melbourne having "four seasons in one day" is a bit of an exaggeration, but it does have merit. We can have sunny mornings, then cloudy afternoons and periods of rain and wind before it returns to sunshine! When deciding what to wear, I always look at the weather online like you do. Usually the maximum temperature occurs in the afternoon (sometimes late afternoon). I also take into consideration whether I have yard duty to decide what I'll wear. :-)

That is interesting that California is predicted to have a lot of rain this winter. I wouldn't say we get a huge amount of rain where I live. It does rain and we can have days when we experience quite a bit of rain, but overall it's pretty average.

Thanks again for the comments!

Your friend,
Miss Jordan Miss Jordanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18443102928126369076noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2633466533683944100.post-63021916589338661432015-09-28T18:24:28.445-07:002015-09-28T18:24:28.445-07:00Miss Jordan,

Sometime I will have to try one!

Booyah is a thicker style of chicken soup. Some may even call it a chicken stew. The main ingredients are chicken, carrots, celery and homemade chicken broth along with some seasonings. If you like chicken soup, your would probably like booyah.

Another Belgian food served at Kermis is Belgian pie. The crust on this pie is not a typical, flakey pie crust. Rather it is a sweet dough much like dough made to make sweet rolls. When made well, it is light and delicious, and sweet but not too sweet, much like the way you described the moon cakes.

Each pie has a different filling. Some have cherry filling with a special cheese topping. Some have rice with custard filling that is usually served with fresh whipped cream. Other toppings are prune, poppyseed, or apple. There are plenty of Belgian pies to choose from.

My Mom is 87 and has made Belgian pies using her Grandma's recipe many times. I want to learn how to make them so we are going to make them together very soon. It should be fun to learn from an expert, my Mom!

Have you ever helped your Grandma make moon cakes?

Sincerely,
Barb (Troy's Grandma from Wisconsin) aka Grandma BarbBarbnoreply@blogger.com
