  1. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

I am happy to be in your class!

This summer I went to Puerto Vallarta in Mexico. I went kayaking in the ocean, and I went jet skiing. When I was jet skiing, I felt dizzy and thrilled.

Did anyone else go to Mexico this summer?

Thank you for being our first commenter! You told us where you went, and you gave us two detail sentences about what you did and how you felt. Well done!

You asked if anyone has been to Mexico. I went to that beautiful country years ago. I went to La Paz, Mexico. There I swam in the beautiful blue water and ate Mexican food.

What did you eat when you were in Mexico?

Like Kasra, I too went to Mexico, but I went to Cancun. I also jet skied, and boy was it fast! It was quite thrilling. I felt like my ♥ was beating 5,000 m.p.h.

Who else went to a foreign country this summer?

This summer, I left our country and went to a foreign country. I flew to London, England. At night, we went on a double-decker bus that had flashing blue and red lights. It was exciting to see the city that way.

Big Ben was beautiful. It is a big clock and bell that tourist love to see and take pictures. I also saw Buckingham Palace. The beefeaters were wearing big, black hats and bright red uniforms.

Have you ever been to London, England to see the beefeaters?

I went to London last summer. I remember seeing the Beefeaters too. They were really cool. I also heard the chime of Big Ben. It was also a little chilly, but overall it was really fun.

Did you go to the London Science Museum? We had a Greta time there. What was your favorite part of London?

This summer I also went to Paris, France. I saw the Eiffel Tower and even went to the top! It was so exciting to see the city from up there. I ate snails, they are called escargot in France. They were yummy.
Guess what? My family ran into Archie's Family at the Louvre Museum, it was funny! We took a picture together!
    I love Paris.

    Have you ever had snails?

      What a lovely trip!

You asked if anyone has ever eaten escargot, or snails. Well, when I was in Paris I did! When I first looked at them, I thought to myself, "What are you thinking? Snails?!" However, I think it is important to try new things so...I popped it in my mouth. It was delicious! I finished the entire serving!

Thanks for being brave while traveling!

You asked if I ate anything from a pastry chef? Yes, I enjoyed a yummy chocolate croissant each morning with my coffee. It was so light and flaky with just the right amount of chocolate. I can still smell the delicious aroma when I think about it.

What were some other foods you enjoyed?

On summer I went to Kentucky because my grandma lives there. When I saw my grandma we went house boating together for three days straight. We slept in a beautiful lake. I was excited and scared because I have a phobia of big fish and snapping turtles. Luckily, I saw no snapping turtles and one big fish. Though I saw turtles.

  8. Hi Mrs. Yollis,

I’m so glad to be in your classroom this year!

This summer, I was in a play at the community theatre I go to. The play was Guys and Dolls. I also made some new friends which was cool. It was really fun to watch other performances and see the other kids do the show too.

Also, we went to San Diego for a couple days to celebrate my Great Uncle’s 85th Birthday!! It was really fun to be with my cousins. It was nice to feel the breeze blow through my hair when we went to the beach.

Where is your favorite place to go to in San Diego? Do you like the beach? Or is Sea World your favorite?

Can’t wait to hear back from you.

This summer I went to Kentucky with Evan's family. We stayed at Evans's houses. In Kentucky, we saw horses, swam, and then we went on a road trip with them. One day we had breakfast in Kentucky, at the original KFC, lunch in Tennessee, and dinner in North Carolina. Then we drove to South Carolina. We saw Fort Sumter, went to the beach and saw jellyfish, and we saw rainbow houses. We walked around a lot and we all had a lot of fun!

Kate and I learned that Fort Sumter is famous because it was where the first shots of the Civil War were fired.
When we visited we saw lots of old cannons and stone walls.
Did you know that Fort Sumter is on an island in Charleston Harbor? We had to take a ferry to get there.

Fort Sumter is where the Civil War began. The South fired on the fort first and this started the war. The walls here were very tall and there many cannons. It was very fun to visit.

  11. Dear Mrs Yollis and class,

How great to see your class back blogging!

My name is Kathleen Morris and I am a primary school teacher from Victoria in Australia.

Back in 2009 Mrs Yollis and I met through educational blogging. Our classes began connecting through blog comments, Skype sessions, and global projects. It was a lot of fun!

I now work on the Student Blogging Challenge which is an 8 week project to help students learn about blogging while connecting with others around the world.

I'm not currently teaching as I'm taking care of my daughter but I hope to follow along your wonderful learning journey.

A note for parents and studnets: you have hit the jackpot with Mrs Yollis! She is a role model teacher for me and so many other educators around the world. I know you're going to have a lot of fun together and learn a lot. So, strap yourself in. It'll be a year to remember!

Our years of blogging together have brought me so much joy, and I know all my students feel that way too! It's hard to believe such a wonderful friendship could be formed when we live so far apart, 8,000 miles!

Thank you for your kind words. It means a lot to me coming from you!

Since you live in the southern hemisphere, the seasons are opposite. What is the weather like for you today? Also, you are so many hours ahead! I wonder if any of my students can guess how many hours ahead you are in Melbourne, Australia.

    2. @ Mrs. Yollis,

It is crazy to think you're 8000 miles away but we can communicate as if you were just down the road!

I am happy to report that spring has sprung in Melbourne! It was quite a cold winter. We don't get snow but lots of grey skies, rain, and cold weather. I am ready for some more sunshine!

Just last week I noticed the fruit trees in my backyard have started blossoming. What a great sign. I wonder if any of your trees having started losing leaves?

I look forward if to hearing if anyone knows about the time zone here in Melbourne, Australia. Even after collaborating for so long, time zones continue to fascinate me!

When I was at the lake, I went paddle boarding. I did yoga on the paddle board. How fun is that? When we left, I was super sad.

    1. Hi Emily F,

Ivy and I (along with Ivy's brother and dad) went to Lake Tahoe last September! We traveled with 3 generations of family friends from 3 families. Seventeen of us flew on an airplane together. Seven additional friends who live in Northern California drove to meet us. All 24 of us stayed at one of the friend's houses! When I was growing up, these 3 families totaled 11 people. Our families have grown now that the original children have spouses and children of our own!

The weather was cool, but not cold enough to snow, and not hot enough to swim. We went on walks and spent time cooking and playing at a nearby park.

It was so much fun being with these friends who are like family. It is a trip we will never forget.

I would love to try yoga on a paddle board! Were you worried about falling in the water?

We saw a cool cave, apes, palaces, a castle, a really big church where Christopher Columbus is buried, a thrilling water park, and an exciting Flamenco show.

    My favorite experience was cliff

This summer I went to Avila Beach, California with my friends and family. The boys got to go ATVing. I was scared at first but after we practiced it got cooler and cooler! We rode on giant dunes and steep hills. Meanwhile the girls and my younger brother got to go shopping all over town.

There was a playground on the beach. I went boogie boarding with my brothers and friends. We celebrated a birthday at a restaurant where a waiter places a cup on top of the birthday person's head, then they stand on a chair behind the person and try to pour water in the cup while blindfolded. The birthday boy got soaked!

We do this every summer. It's a new tradition. Avila Beach was a BLAST!

  16. Hi Mrs. Yollis,

This summer was so much fun! I was excited to go to two different camps.

During the first session of the summer, I went to Camp Keystone where I learned to do horseback riding, ride on a go-cart and even did some boating! I also made a lot of new friends.

The second session was at Art Camp where I was able to make slime everyday. I learned the difference between warm and cool colors and all the different types of shading. My favorite part was when I fooled everyone with my fake food art.

After camp, I did some traveling. I went to Philadelphia and learned a lot about American History by visiting Betsy Ross's house and the Liberty Bell.

We spent the rest of the vacation on the beach and at the boardwalk for some fun games and rides. After an 6 hour flight home, my grandma and grandpa met me back at my house with open arms and gifts! We had such a great visit. It was a great start to the new school year.

Has anyone been to the East Coast?
