Our teacher is Mrs. Yollis. She has been teaching elementary school for 32 years and has been an educational blogger for 11 years. She is the administrator of this class blog, but also runs a class photo-of-the-day blog. It is called the Yollis 365 Project, and it is a fabulous place to share photos, creative writing, and poetry!

Meet the Third Graders
πŸ”»πŸ”»πŸ”»πŸ”»πŸ”»πŸ”»πŸ”»πŸ”»πŸ”»πŸ”»

Our class is a third-grade class filled with 11 boys and 15 girls. We are 1:1 with Acers, so we love integrating technology. For example, we LOVE watching BrainpopJr videos, looking at the National Weather Service's forecast, educating ourselves with Freckle,  creating and sharing our learning with Seesaw, and "going places" using the Chrome Extension Earth View

Meet Beverly the bear, Barnaby Bones, and Flat Panda!

When not at school, the class has a lot of hobbies and interests. We are only about 20 miles from the Pacific Ocean, so many students like to collect shells, swim, boogie board, climb the rocks, search for sea glass, build sand castles, and surf. One student recently went deep sea fishing and caught over 18 fish, some sand dabs and rockfish. Several students have made the trip to Catalina Island.

Sports are a big part of everyone's life. Numerous students play soccer. Handball is popular, and so is baseball. At recess, some popular games are prisoner, jump roping, kickball, soccer, tetherball, dodgeball, and hula hooping.

One student goes to the local public pool to do laps.

Food is an important part of life and we have many favorites! Some popular foods at lunch are pizza, hot dogs, corn dogs, pasta, and chicken nuggets. Sometimes they serve pancakes!

For fun, we like to play Silent Speed Ball, learn sign language from one of Mrs. Yollis' former students, and of course, juggling!

Where Are We?

Mrs. Yollis' third graders live in the northern hemisphere. It is fall. North America is our continent. Our nation is the United States of America. However, sometimes our country is abbreviated as the U.S.A. or America. Our country is divided up into fifty states, and we live in one of the fifty states, California.

California

California is the third largest state after Alaska and Texas. Out of all the 50 states, we have the largest population. There are more than 39 million Californians! Our state capital is Sacramento, and our largest urban area is Los Angeles. We live in a suburb of LA.

Here is the Californian flag.

What hemisphere and country do you live in?

What are some popular foods and games played at your school?

What fun games do you play for a brain break?

What questions do you have for us?
We will reply to your comments.

Tell us about your class!

  1. Greetings Mrs. Yollis and Class,

I haven’t visited the blog or commented in awhile, and I can see that you certainly have been busy! I’m impressed by how well this post is put together and explains so much information about you and where you live.

I think my favorite part is seeing your avatars and how you cleverly used Seesaw and your Acer cameras. Well done!

Now, to answer all your questions:

I live in the same hemisphere and country that you do.

When I was in elementary school, pizza and hot dogs were also very popular, although the cafeteria did not serve them. One meal I remember from the cafeteria at my school was Salisbury steak with mashed potatoes and green beans. I think I remember it because I didn’t really like it at all! I’ll let you do your own research about what Salisbury steak is! I actually took my own lunch to school most days, and my favorite sandwich was peanut butter and ham with crunchy lettuce! I’ll bet you’ve never even heard of anyone eating such a sandwich!

The recess activities I enjoyed most were tetherball, handball, and four square. I also loved playing kickball and hanging upside down on the bars.

Brain breaks are so important, but when I was in school, we didn’t use that term. I remember loving to play Heads Up/7 Up. Nowadays when I need a brain break, I go outside and work in my garden or do some yoga stretches.

Being active is a very important part of my day. I ride my trike at the beach bike path, take water aerobics and yoga classes, and hike or walk as often as possible. What do you do to get exercise?

I’d love to hear more about how to use Seesaw, as well as how you learn using Freckle!
I’d also enjoy hearing about what places you’ve “visited” using Chrome Extension Earth View.

    All the best,

    Mrs. Ranney

    1. Dear Mrs. Ranney,

What a treat it was to get a comment from you!

Thank you for sharing about what you ate in elementary school. Brett loves steak, but is not sure what Salisbury steak is. From your reaction, it does not sound too tasty. Everyone has hear of peanut butter and jelly, but no one has ever heard of peanut butter and ham with crunchy lettuce. We are going to think about that. :-)

Everyone loves to play! Katie loves to play tether ball and kick ball at recess and lunch. Sometimes Scarlett and her friends skip around singing songs. They converted "It's Beginning to Look A Lot Like Christmas" to "It's Beginning to Look A Lot Like Halloween!"

You asked what places we've “visited” using Chrome Extension Earth View. Rebecca has visited the Statue of Liberty! Faith has journeyed to the Eiffel Tower. Hana explored London, England.

We have some questions for you. What is your favorite color? What is your favorite food? Do you have a pet?

      Sincerely,
Brett, Logan, Katie, Abby, Hana, Rebecca, Kishor, Faith, Josh, Scarlett, and Mrs. Y♥llis

    2. @Brett, Logan, Katie, Abby, Hana, Rebecca, Kishor, Faith, Josh, Scarlett, and Mrs. Y♥llis,

Thanks so much for your reply! I particularly enjoyed finding out where you have visited using Chrome Extension Earth View. All three of the places you have "visited" are places I have actually traveled to!

My answers to your questions are:

      My favorite color is purple!

It's difficult for me to choose one favorite food because I love so many! My favorite breakfast food is oatmeal. This morning I enjoyed it with homemade applesauce mixed in, topped with cottage cheese and chopped pecans. For dinner, a meal I love is barbecued salmon with rice and roasted vegetables.

I consider the birds in my backyard my pets. There are often hummingbirds, finches, scrub jays, warblers, and phoebes that visit our fountains and feeders.

What about you? Do you have pets, favorite foods, or favorite colors?

Looking forward to getting to know all of you better through the blog!

      Cheers,

      Mrs. Ranney

    3. Dear Mrs. Ranney,
That is an excellent comment! I do have a pet, favorite food and color. My pet is a fish named Midnight and he has been alive for 4 years!

I have a lot of favorite foods. They are mac and cheese, chicken nuggets (and chicken,) scones, waffles, grilled cheese, french toast, and pancakes!

I also have so many favorite colors like blue, pink, red, purple, gold, silver, sea green, and finally black.

What are some of your skills?

      What are you good at?

      Do you play instruments?

      Love,

  2. Dear Mrs Yollis and class,

What a fantastic first post for the Student Blogging Challenge!

I loved seeing your creative avatars!

I also loved seeing a picture of my old friends Panda and Beverly. I was once lucky enough to visit your very classroom and meet your lovable mascots. You can read about that here http://yollisclassblog.blogspot.com/2012/06/blogging-buddies-meet.html

As you know one of the most popular lunchtime activities at our school is downball. Yesterday I noticed that a group of grade 5 students were playing with a group of prep (kindergarten) students. Do students from different grade levels play together at your school? Or do you have certain parts of the school you have to stick to?

    Best wishes,

    1. Dear Mrs. Morris,

Thank you for being our first international commentor!

You asked if kids play in different areas. Yes, they do. The 4th and 5th graders play at recess and lunch by themselves. The 2nd and third play before them. The kindergarten students have their own playground.

On our playground we cannot we have to stay on the yard or blacktop. Recently, we got to fabulous soccer nets. In the upper yard we have beautiful mural that the kids play handball and sour apple against.

What is your favorite state in America? What is your favorite state in Australia?

What is your favorite Australian animal?

  3. Dear Sasha, Colin, Kishor, Josh, Michaela, and Mrs. Y♥llis,

How lovely to receive such a quality reply from you all!

It sounds like your students have breaks at different times? I haven't seen that in any schools here. The bell times are all the same but sometimes students are only allowed to play in certain areas of their school.

How lucky to get some new soccer nets! The mural sounds nice. Did the students paint it?

Hmm, I live in the state of Victoria which is very nice but I do love Queensland. The weather is warmer than here and there are lots of nice beaches. It's a popular holiday destination -- a bit like California perhaps!

I have two favourite US states -- California, of course. I have visited Los Angeles, San Diego, and San Francisco. My other favourite state is New York. Who doesn't love New York City? It's a very exciting place to visit.

Just yesterday I was telling my students about an Australian animal called a quokka. It lives on a small island off Western Australia called Rottnest Island. Maybe Mrs. Yollis could help you find a picture of quokkas. They're very cute!

    Your blogging buddy down under,
    Mrs Morris

  4. Dear Mrs. Yollis' class,
We are Mrs. Holliday's second grade class. We have 22 students in our class. We live in Ohio in the United States. We are in the Northern Hemisphere, and we are also in North America.

For brain breaks we like to do GoNoodle videos. One of our favorites is Run the Red Carpet. We love pizza day at school, and Chicken Little Friday. Our favorite games in P.E. class is Capture the Football and GaGa, which is kind of like Dodgeball.

What is your favorite thing to do in your classroom?

We would love to share our avatars and fun facts about us. Please visit our class blog to learn more about us! http://holliday2nd.weebly.com

I have never been to Ohio, but my grandmother grew up outside of Columbus. I have some family that still lives there. My grandmother never misses watching Ohio State play football. I hope to visit Ohio one day.

What are the rules for Capture the Football? What is Chicken Little Friday?

My favorite thing to do in our classroom is to try new technology on our Acers. I especially like to try using Google Earth to look at landmarks. Recently, I wandered off to look at the Acropolis in Greece because my family is planning a trip there next Summer.

I also like to post math tutorials on Seesaw. Explaining math problems helps me to learn how to solve them and present my work at the same time.

What city in Ohio do you live in?
Are there any really popular foods in your city?
Do any of you have relatives in Los Angeles?

I haven't been to Ohio, but my sister has and she had a great time. Hopefully next time we visit our friends in Ohio I can go too.

I'm really curious what Chicken Little Friday is, it sounds really fun. I really like playing Gaga too. I don't play it at school but we play it at my summer camp. Silent Speed Ball is my favorite game to play in the classroom.

      Sincerely,

    4. Dear Hana,
I really loved your comment about France and California!

When you were just a little girl I went on a trip to France. You are right! The flowers are beautiful and so is the Eiffel Tower. My favorite thing to do was to sit on the sidewalk cafes drinking coffee and watching all of the interesting people walking by. I also loved looking at the art in the museums.

My favorite French food was dessert. There were many lovely pastries and pies that were delicious to eat. I especially liked the coffee that I drank when I ate the desserts.

I lived in California for many years before you were born, so it is so much fun to visit my granddaughter now. I love many of the foods you talked about also, especially some of the chicken nuggets.

I am so excited to see how my granddaughter has grown and become more confident each year. It is so much fun to write about her in this blog. I am proud to be Hana's grandmother and I think the family blog is a great idea.

What will you learn from writing in the blog?

What challenges have you had in school?

What challenges do have outside of school?

Now to answer your questions, the most challenging thing in school are 2 step multiplication problems, and 3 step multiplication problems.

My challenges outside of school are controlling my emotions, drawing, riding my bike with out falling off on downhills, and writing.

From writing in the blog I will learn it will help me be a better typer and writer.

What are some skills that you have?

What do you do for a free time?

  6. Dear Lily,

I also went on the Eurostar this summer to travel from Paris to London. Our class asked today what the Eurostar is so I thought I would provide an explanation.

The Eurostar is a fast-speed train that connects Paris and London. It's different than other trains because it travels in a dark tunnel built under water. It leaves from Gare De Nord in Paris, one of many train stations. It arrives at St. Pancras station in London, which is right next to King's Cross Station. Who knows what is significant about King's Cross Station?

I also want to talk about another type of transportation that I took on my summer vacation. In Paris, once again there is an underground transportation system called the Metro. It feels like an entire city underground because not only are their trains but stores, food places and entertainment. We used the Metro all the time to get around. Our main station was Hotel D Ville.

In London, the underground rail is called the Tube. Each day we would get on the Tube at Notting Hill Gate and travel to the sights we planned for the day. Sometimes the Tube was empty but one time during A Tour for Muggles, it was so crowded, we could barely move. Who wants to learn more about the Tour for Muggles?

I hope you enjoyed this post on the transportation system in two European countries. Has anyone else been on transportation anywhere else?

    Happy blogging,

    Katie

    ReplyDelete
  7. @ Katie,

I also took the tube in London and the metro in Paris.

We traveled by plane to get there. We also took taxis, shuttles and boat tours. I have taken cruises on ships. One of the most interesting types of transportation was the cable car we went on up to Table Mountain in South Africa. If you go on Google Maps you can see it too.

We also took a Harry Potter Tour. The significance of King's Cross is that is where 9 3/4 platform is. The platform is the way Harry Potter and his friend get onto the Hogwarts train.

    @Class,

Where did you travel this summer?

    What continents have you visited?

What countries have you traveled to?

Where would you like to journey to?

I did some things in Hawaii like zip lining, horse back riding, and play with my family where we stayed. My grandma and grandpa paid for the zip lining and horse back riding. The last time we went to Hawaii we were there for Hanukkah and Christmas. We had different family there as well like of course my mom, dad, and sister, my cousins, my aunts and uncles my aunt was pregnant!

We also went to the beach.

  8. Hello Mrs Yollis

I am a student teacher who is working with some students who are learning about blogging. I live in the Southern Hemisphere. More specifically, in Perth, Western Australia.

School children here love pizza, fresh fruit, milkshakes and pancakes. The most popular games are handball, Aussie Rules football and soccer.

I would like to thank you for having such a wonderful example of a blog and also thank your students for their informative videos.

What is the weather like in California at the moment? Perth is about to get really hot! Some days, the temperature can be over 40 degrees Celsius.

    Thanks again,

    Anna

    1. @ Anna,

Thanks so much for your thoughtful comment! My students and I appreciate your kind words.

We do live in the northern hemisphere near Los Angeles. We are having a tough time with wildfires at the current moment. In fact, school has been canceled for the rest of the week because of the disaster.

Although it is fall here in the northern hemisphere, the temperatures here are not too low. It is 75˚ F (24˚ C) right now. What is causing problems with the wildfire is the wind. There are very strong gusts that we get this time of year.

      What grades are your students?

      Warmly,
      Mrs. Y♥llis
