Welcome Back 2018-2019

Welcome back to a new school year!

Here's a video greeting from Mrs. Yollis!

Parents and Students

This blog is the centerpiece of our classroom community. It is a wonderful space for sharing and learning together. Here is a link to an article I wrote about the benefits of classroom blogging. I hope you'll have a chance to read it before our Back to School Night.

If you are one of our blogging buddies, please introduce yourself to my new class. Where are you from? What have you been up to?

  1. Dear Mrs. Yollis and my new class,

My name is Faith. I am a new student, but both of my brothers were in Mrs. Yollis' class. Now here I am in this class! I like horseback riding, swimming, playing with toys, making block creations, and beagles. I am a Brownie Girl Scout.

This summer I went on a big long New England trip after visiting my Grandma in Wisconsin. First, I went to Boston, Massachusetts. Then I visited Vermont, New Hampshire, and Bar, Harbor, Maine. After New England, we went to Washington, DC. and met my Grandma Barb, who is a blogging buddy on this blog.

Just like Mrs. Yollis went to National Parks this summer, I also went to National Parks. I went to Acadia National Park in Maine. I also went to the White House and got a Junior Park Ranger badge there. Did you know that the White House is a National Park?

I'm looking forward to all of this fun! Did any of my classmates go to National Parks too?

    Love,
    Faith

    1. @ Faith,

I would like to commend you for being the very first blogger of the year! You published your comment at 7:34 P.M. and Logan, your new classmate, published his at 7:56 P.M. How much time elapsed (or passed) between your two comments? How did you solve the math problem?

I am thrilled to have you in my class! As you said, Grandma Barb is a friend of the blog, and I look forward to connecting with her. Do you think we will get any other grandparents or family members connecting with us? I hope so!

Like you, I love National Parks! What did you see in Acadia National Park? What is a Junior Park Ranger badge and how do you earn them?

Looking forward to seeing you in class!

    2. @ Mrs. Yollis,

I was really, really excited to be in your class today and this was probably the best first day of class in my life. You asked how I solved the math problem. I counted by tens from 7:34 to 7:44 then from 7:44 to 7:54 and then added two more which equaled to 22. So Logan commented 22 minutes after me.

      Love,
      Faith

    3. @Faith,

When I saw your comment, I just had to reply. My name is Faith too, and it is very rare that I meet another one!

Your trip to New England sounds wonderful. Acadia National Park is definitely on my list of places to visit one day.

I look forward to future conversations with you here on the blog!

      Regards,

    4. @ Mrs. Ranney,

Thank you for your reply. It is rare that I see another Faith too.

My big brother Troy used to communicate with you on this blog when he had Mrs. Yollis. He loved your pictures of birds.

I hope you do get to go to Acadia National Park. My favorite things there were eating licorice from a candy store in Bar Harbor and picking wild blueberries on a mountain.

Are you still watching and feeding birds in your backyard?

      From,
      Faith

    5. @Faith,

Thanks so much for responding! I definitely remember Troy and the love of birds that we shared! I still have a drawing that he made for me of a very special scrub jay! You can probably find some photos of my friend Scrubbers on the 365.

I love hearing about what you enjoyed doing in Maine. I love both blueberries and licorice!

Yes, I still watch and feed birds in my backyard. Although Scrubbers doesn't visit anymore, we do have two new scrub jays who visit often, calling out and waiting for peanuts. We also have many hummingbirds and finches, and just two days ago I spotted a towhee in my garden doing the towhee shuffle! That's what I like to call what they do as they hop back and forth in the dirt foraging for food!

One unwelcome visitor to our backyard recently is not a bird, however. It's a skunk! We haven't seen it, but you can probably guess how we know!

Please say hello to Troy from me. Is he still birding? What special hobbies do you enjoy?

Looking forward to more conversations with you and your classmates!

      All the best,
      Mrs. Ranney

I am excited to be in your class this year! This summer I went to Camp Keystone and had so much fun. I really liked the go-karts and the zipline. I went to Mammoth Mountain and went horseback riding, kayaking, mountain biking, hiking and fishing. I caught a trout too!

You said you caught a trout in Mammoth. Did you keep it or did you throw it back? What bait did you use?

      See you tomorrow!

I used bait that smelled like garlic and felt like play-doh. We didn't plan to go fishing but went last minute. We were surprised when we caught a fish! We named the fish Mr. Trout. We didn't have the tools to clean the fish so we threw Mr. Trout back. I loved fishing and want to go again. What did you do with the fish you caught?

I am so excited to have the same teacher that my mom had for third grade!

My name is Mrs Morris and I'm a teacher in Australia. My students have been collaborating with Mrs Yollis' students since 2009!

I was excited to see this first post of the new school year.

I loved hearing about Mr and Mrs Yollis' summer adventure with Buck. Because we're in the Southern Hempisphere, it's winter time here in Australia. So we haven't had our long break. We will have to wait until Christmas time.

Have an amazing first day of school!

It was the first play Ive ever been in and I loved it! The second camp was Sierra Canyon and my favorite part was Magic. I liked it because the Magic teacher did cool tricks. I also went horseback riding and to the beach this summer. I learned how to boogie board!! I can't wait to meet you today!

  5. Dear Mrs. Yollis and new third graders,

My name is Ben Vizvary and I was in your shoes fifteen years ago!
Mrs. Yollis was my second grade teacher in 2002 and my third grade teacher in 2003. We didn't have a blog back then, but I love being able to see what you will all be doing during the school year.

Like all of you, I started my first day of school this week too! I am 24 years old and currently in my final year of Law School in Chicago, Illinois. It is hard for me to believe, but yesterday was my last first day of school ever!

You are all very lucky because Mrs. Yollis is one of the nicest and best teachers you will ever meet. There are so many fun activities that you will do during the school year that you will be excited to go to school every day to find out what you will be learning next!

I hope everyone has a great first day tomorrow and an awesome third grade year with Mrs. Yollis. I cant wait to see what you all will be doing!

I have smile a mile wide! What a treat to get such a beautiful comment from you! I appreciate your kind words!

This year we will be learning idioms, so I want to thank you for using one with my students. I wonder if they know what you meant when you said, "I was in your shoes fifteen years ago!" We'll see when we read it tomorrow.

I am exceedingly proud of you! It takes a lot of hard work to become a lawyer. You were a hard-worker as an elementary student, and I see nothing has changed. Well done, Ben!

Here is a trip down memory lane involving your sister. When she was in my class, we won First Runner Up for Best Class Blog. We made a video to celebrate our win. Here is a link for you: Edublog Awards :: 2009. Did you spot her?

If you are home visiting, we'd love for you to stop by. My students would love to meet you and hear your stories from second and third grade.

Again, you made my day with this comment!

  6. Dear Mrs. Yollis and my new third grade class,

My name is Katie and I'm excited for third grade. This summer, I went to Paris and London with my family for almost two weeks. My favorite places in Paris were the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre. In London, I loved the Tour for Muggles. If you don't know what a Muggle is, it's a non-wizard in Harry Potter books.

I also went to two camps, Camp Keystone and Art Camp. My favorite thing at Camp Keystone was the zip-lining. At Art Camp, I enjoyed the Harry Potter class, where we made creations inspired by the books.

If you had not guessed, I love Harry Potter. This summer I finished reading the entire series. Now, I am trying to find a new book I love just as much. Do you have any recommendations?

Thank you for writing such a wonderful comment! I noticed you capitalized all your proper nouns, and you put space between the paragraphs. Sometimes it is hard to read on a computer screen, but having "eye breaks" (white space) between paragraphs really helps.

You are a person who perseveres! (That's a fancy word that means you never give up.) I hear you were using the Safari browser and the comment kept disappearing! Luckily your mom saved it in a document, so we finally got your outstanding comment. I recommend using the Chrome browser or the Firefox browser. You won't have any problems then.

It sounds like you had a fabulous summer. Did you see any famous paintings at the Louvre?

    2. Hi Mrs. Yollis,

I am so happy that I got you as my teacher. Today was a great day even though it was too short.

You asked about the Louvre. Yes, I saw many famous paintings. We went on a scavenger hunt throughout the Louvre to find clues to unlock a mystery. During this, we learned about many paintings and sculptures. We saw sculptures of gods and paintings of a variety of subjects.

My favorite painting was the Mona Lisa by Leonardo Di Vinci. Even though it wasn't as big as I expected, I still liked it. It was cool when she looked at you no matter where you were standing.

I also saw paintings based off the four seasons. Different faces were made of fruits, flowers and foods that represent each season.

Do you have a favorite artist?

      Delete
    3. @Katie

My favorite artist Monet. My mom and I have similar taste in art. My favorite Monet painting is from the Waterlily Collection. I have a framed copy/poster of one of the water lily paintings in my room.

@Class, Mrs. Yollis and fellow bloggers,

Does anyone else know who Monet was and enjoy his paintings?

      Cheers,

I enjoyed Monet's paintings at the Orangerie Museum in the Jardin de Tuilleries in Paris. I saw Monet's last pieces of art he ever painted. They were huge and filled up the walls.

  7. Dear Mrs. Yollis,
My name is Kishor and I liked your back to school video. I’m excited to be in 3rd grade. In school I like to do math and I’m excited to learn multiplication. I don’t like writing because my hand hurts.
When I’m not in school I take Karate classes. I’m a red belt in Karate. I take piano lessons and I practice with my Dad. I also play soccer and my Dad is the assistant coach.
This summer I went to Toronto, Canada. I visited my Grandparents, Uncles, Aunts and Cousins. I went on roller coasters at least once a week. I went to Niagara Falls and played games at the arcade. I also saw the falls and the fireworks. I carefully played with sparklers at my Cousin cottage. I went bike riding, played mini golf and played soccer with my Cousins. Sadly we didn’t go to the CN tower this time.

My name is Lily and I am very excited about this year and our class!

I love to play soccer and I play club on a team named Barcelona. I also love reading, golf, travel, spending time with my family and my dogs named Babe and London.

This summer I traveled to London and Paris for over two weeks. Some of my favorite London places were the Tower of London, Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle and Platform 9 3/4. Platform 9 3/4 is from the Harry Potter book series where they get onto the Hogwarts Express. We also went to Manchester and saw the Manchester United soccer stadium. It was impressive. We also went to Kensington Palace and saw the Princess Dianna exhibit and memorial. A highlight in London was going to Mad Hatter's Tea.

In Paris some of my favorite things were The Eiffel Tower and looking down from the amazing views, The Louvre Museum, Musee d'orsay and The Palace of Versailles and all of the rooms and paintings.

During summer, I also attended golf camp. We traveled up to Pismo Beach and visited some colleges like UCSB and Cal Poly for my brother Aidan. Aidan is in high school, and my brother Lucas goes to the middle school.

I just finished reading the Harry Potter book series. I am a Gryffindor, is anyone else a Gryffindor?

I loved being in Paris and visiting the Musee d'Orsay and the Louvre. Is the Musee d'Orsay the one with the giant Monet paintings of lilies? I adore museums! Which museum was your favorite and why?

You mentioned you visited the University of California at Santa Barbara (UCSB). That is where I went to school! Isn't it a gorgeous campus right there on the ocean?

UCSB was an amazing campus. I love the ocean and the beach!

  12. Dear Mrs. Yollis' New Third Graders,

My name is Lisa and I am Faith's mom. In the past, when my sons were in Mrs. Yollis' class, I was a very active participant on this blog. I always enjoyed connecting with others here! I look forward to another year of blog conversations and meaningful connections.

In reading the comments that have been left, I have already read some very interesting things! I really enjoyed reading the perspective of Ben, the former student of Mrs. Yollis. Plus, he goes to law school in Chicago, which is where I went to college. That was an immediate connection that I made to his comment. As soon as I read Ben's post, my mind immediately thought of all the sights and sounds of Chicago.

Katie and Lily's posts made me recall when I visited London and Paris for the first time. Carlie, Cassidy, Abby, and Kishor's comments made me think about how great summer adventures can happen far away or close to home! Logan's comment really made me want to visit Mammoth. I have never been there, but most of my friends have.

I look forward to seeing all of the blog posts, group work, videos, and more that you will create this year as third graders in Mrs. Yollis' class. I bet that other parents will get "hooked" on the blog just like I did!

  13. Dear Mrs. Yollis and new third graders,

I’m Barb, Faith’s Grandma from Wisconsin also known to Mrs. Yollis’ students as Grandma Barb. I’ve just been reading through all of the thoughtful and informative comments on the blog. It sounds like everyone had exciting adventures this summer.

I too have had a busy summer. As Faith mentioned, I had two opportunities to vacation with Faith and her family. Once at my house in Wisconsin and once when we met in Washington, D.C. and explored that city.

In between my time with Faith and her family, I sold my house and am currently packing everything up and moving to a condo on the river with views overlooking Lake Michigan.

In Wisconsin, we get a fair amount of snow during the winter. One of the best parts of moving to a condo is I won’t have to shovel any more snow. Yay! I have shoveled snow for many decades so this winter I am looking forward to just watching it snow without having to clean it all up.

@Mrs. Yollis, your 5,000 mile trip sounds like so much fun. How many states did you drive through on your adventure? How many days were you traveling?

@Faith, we saw so many historic and fascinating things when we were visiting Washington, D.C. Can you make a suggestion of something you saw that you think your classmates might find interesting to see if they were to visit there?

    Happy Blogging!

    2. @Mrs. Ranney,
I am so glad that Lily finally gets to experience the fun of blogging that I did in third grade. I can't wait to see all of the fun things that they post this year and what they will do that is similar to what I did in your class.
      Cheers,
      Lucas

  17. Dear Mrs. Yollis and Class,

I am so excited for this new school year you are embarking on together! I know you're in for many wonderful experiences.

I taught at Chaparral for 30 years before retiring in 2014 and have known Mrs. Yollis since she started teaching! When Mrs. Yollis and I taught 3rd grade together, she encouraged me to start a blog. I loved blogging and so did my classes!

During the summer I rode on the beach bike path every week, took water aerobics classes, and spent a great deal of time in my backyard garden. I also enjoyed camping and hiking in the Eastern Sierras. Although I didn't visit any national parks, I have visited many in the past and have plans for the future as well. One of my favorites is Glacier National Park in Montana. In fact, the first time I visited there was with Mrs. Yollis 22 years ago!

I am an avid photographer and plan to submit some photos this year for the 365 Blog. You may search and find some that I've contributed in the past!

I look forward to following your adventures together here on the blog. Here's to a super 2018-2019 school year!

    All the best,
    Your blogging buddy,
    Mrs. Ranney

    2. @Lily,

Thank you for your reply! Way to keep the conversation going! I'm also very happy to keep connected this way.

I noticed when I read one of your previous comments that you and I have a couple of things in common. I also love museums and particularly enjoyed the Palace at Versailles when I visited Paris. In addition, I love the beach and ocean! In fact, I try to get to the beach at least once a week, usually to ride on the bike path and sometimes to take photographs - particularly of birds.

Looking forward to reading about all your class adventures!

      Cheers to you,
      Mrs. Ranney

  18. Dear Mrs. Yollis and New Classmates,
My name is Rebecca. I had a fun summer. I went to San Diego. In San Diego, I saw my grandparents and uncle. They are from my dads's part of the family. We went to the Wild Animal Park. We also went to two resorts in Orange County. The resorts also had fun things to do like swimming pools with water slides, an arcade and a walkway to the beach. I had a great summer!
    Love, Rebecca

  19. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

It's me Jake F.! I hope you had a wonderful summer. Thank you for everything last year.

This summer I went to Nantucket, which is an island located off of Massachusetts. We went with my brothers and my mom and dad. We spent time with our cousins and family.

We also drove the entire way to Sedona on a different trip! It was a long drive, but I had a great time once we got there. I also went to Hurricane Harbor, which is a water park, twice this summer! I celebrated an early birthday there, with a couple of my friends.

I hope you have a great school year with your new class! You will be missed!

    Yours truly,
    Jake

  20. Dear Mrs. Yollis and classmates,

This summer, I went to Nantucket with my family. The flight was four hours, but it was worth it. I learned how to ride a bike with my friends and cousins.

I also got two new puppies who are very cute! Their names are Olive and Hazel. They are fluffy white and black bernadoodles. I have so much fun playing with them. They are already five months!

I look forward to being in Mrs. Yollis's class this year. My brother had her last year! I am excited to start 3rd grade!

    Warmly,
    Benjamin F.

  21. Dear Mrs. Yollis and class,

My name is Mrs. Talley, and I am a school librarian in Hershey, Pennsylvania. Mrs. Yollis and I have been corresponding via this blog and via Skype for a few years now, and I couldn't wait to read the first post and comments of the new school year. I must say I am incredibly impressed by the comments you third graders have written! You are already off to a fabulous start with your authentic writing, and I look forward to reading more of your comments in the months to come.

I teach 2nd, 4th, and 5th grade library students. My 4th graders take part in a mini-blog unit during which we have the opportunity to correspond with your class through the 365 blog. I am looking forward to learning more about your class. I read all of the comments that have been written thus far, and it's amazing how similar your interests are to my own students here on the east coast! We, too, have many Harry Potter fans in our school - most of whom prefer Gryffindors! Many of my students have traveled to the same summer destinations as students in your class, and I visited one of the National Parks mentioned in your comments, Acadia National Park located in Maine. I plan to post some pictures from my summer travels on the 365 blog. Until we connect again through blogging, I wish you all a fabulous school year ahead. You are so very fortunate to be in Mrs. Yollis' class because she is dedicated to making learning both meaningful and enjoyable!

    Your blogging buddy,
    Mrs. Talley

    Dear Mrs. Yollis and class,

Hello everyone! A lot of you may know me, and I am one of Mrs. Yollis's former students. She is an amazing teacher in all areas, especially writing! Without Mrs. Yollis, I would still be typing the wrong way and never know! I wouldn't be even close to as good a writer as I am now. You're very lucky you got her as you're teacher!

    You're new blogging buddy,
    W♦ll
