The first day of spring is called the
Vernal Equinox.

Spring started on Saturday, March 19, 2016, at 9:30 P.M. (PDT) in southern California. It is called the Vernal Equinox. There are two times when the sun is exactly above the equator. One equinox is in September and the other is in March. Equinox means equal night and there are nearly twelve hours of day and twelve hours of night.

Here is a video from Discovery Education to

help explain the Vernal Equinox!

Even Mrs. Yollis' website is blooming!

  1. Dear Mrs. Yollis and class,

There are four different seasons, winter, spring, summer, and fall. In the winter, the weather is chilly. That is why you need mittens, scarfs, hats, and heavy coats. This season is fun. You get to go sledding, have a snowball fight, and even drink hot chocolate. Yum!

From the Hibernation video, I learned ground squirrels, bats, turtles, frogs, door mice, bears, and hedgehogs all hibernate in winter. I also learned when the weather is warm, the animals who hibernated come out of there habitat.

They live in a forests that can have shrubs, bushes, flowers, food, and shelter for animals. There are many different trees in the forest. Some examples are deciduous trees, coniferous trees, and pine trees. Pine trees grow pinecones.

I have also noticed that a lot of flowers start to grow in spring. I like to look at the flowers in our garden and watch videos of spring so I can learn more about the season.

From brainpop I learned spring is between winter and summer. Spring is usually warmer than winter but colder than summer. Plants grow in the season of spring. There are different kinds of flowers like sunflowers, lilies, and roses. Spring is one of my favorite seasons. Also, spring days are longer than winter. In the spring there can be a lot of rain. Sometimes there can be storms. At the beginning of spring, you could wear light sweaters and pants, and at the end of spring you could wear t-shirts and shorts.

Summer is the hottest season out of all the seasons. You could wear shorts and t-shirts and you should put on a lot of sunscreen. During the summer, I like to go to the beach.

Finally, fall is filled with leaves. Leaves are different colors like red and orange. The weather starts to get chilly. That is why you need to wear a sweater.

    What is your favorite season?

    Love,
    Keya

  2. Dear Mrs. Yollis and class,

In the brainpop video for Fresh Water Habitats, I learned everyone needs fresh water. A lake is a large fresh body of water and a pond is a small fresh body of water.

I also learned that a habitat is were an animal lives. A river otter lives in the river. The largest river in the world is the Nile river. It is in Africa.

Last of all, I like the video about the sun. Don't look at the sun. It could ruin your eyes. The sun is the closest to star to the earth. The sun provides heat to earth.

What is your favorite animal that lives in a fresh water habitat?

    Love,
    Keya

  3. Hello Mrs. Yollis and class,

Yes, the equinox has arrived "down" here in Australia as well. It's the time of the year our days and nights match. For you, entering Spring, the days will become longer than the nights. For us, entering Autumn (Fall), our days will become shorter.

Back in 2013, I prepared a post on our seasons for Mrs. Yollis's 2013 class. It shares why we have the seasons. Here is a link...

Australia can be a little different than many countries. It takes the season as beginning at the beginning of the month therefore the media was talking about it being Autumn (Fall) on March 1st.

I tend to prefer counting seasons as beginning with an equinox or solstice. Our next change of seasons doesn't happen until the solstice in June, for you the Summer Solstice and for us the Winter Solstice.

A little research and I found information about other seasons followed by some people in the world. Have you heard of the Hindu seasons, Vasanta, Greeshma, Varsha, Sharad, Hemanta and Shishira?

Want to find out more about the Hindu, Bengali and Tamil seasons? Here is a link...

Without our seasons, temperatures would become more stable. To feel the differences, we would have to travel north or south. I think I like our change of seasons. How about you?

  4. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

Spring is a time when flowers bloom and the weather gets balmy. Also, in spring it gets windier so people go and fly their kites. In spring, animals come out of hibernation. Many animals have their young in the spring because the food is plentiful.

One of my favorite activities to do in spring is ride a bike with my friends. Sometimes, if there is pleasant weather, my family and I have a delightful picnics at the park. I also do a lot of gardening because this is the season when plants grow.

I look forward to spring break every year because I get to spend time with my family. We usually go some place entertaining with our friends. Since we usually go somewhere cold for winter break (like skiing), it is nice to go somewhere warm (like the beach) for a change. I also take pleasure and time choosing what to pack for my trip.

What do you enjoy doing in Spring?

    Sincerely,
    Abigail

  5. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

I love the spring time, our wisteria blooms and attracts dozens of bees. We have had people ask if they could paint our wisteria tree. It is from the pea family, and, after it flowers, it produces seed pods like beans which explode with a loud crack around October. They fire their seeds all across our yard.

Spring is my favorite season as it is not too hot and not too cold, it rains a bit and is warm a bit. I also like it because the days get longer and the nights get shorter.

    Sincerely,
    Will

  6. Dear Mrs. Yollis--
My favorite sign of spring that I've noticed recently is the sweet smell of jasmine flowers in the air. Jasmine flowers have always been one of my favorite scents. In fact, I wore jasmine perfume all through college. I think, however, that my perfume was artificial jasmine. I recall reading that jasmine oil requires so many crushed flowers to make that it is very expensive. I just googled jasmine oil and found that pure, unadulterated jasmine oil costs $1500 for 4 ounces. Ouch! That's quite a bit of money to spend to smell like a spring evening!
    Have a lovely springtime.
    Warmly,
    Vanessa, Lily's Mom
