Scooter's ABCs of Bully Prevention!

Today we had a talented and inspiring guest at our school, Scooter Christensen of the Harlem Globetrotters!

Scooter performed some impressive and entertaining basketball tricks.

Scooter Christensen is an expert basketball spinner. In fact, Scooter holds two Guinness World Records. One for spinning a basketball on his nose and one for spinning a basketball on his head.

Although everyone enjoyed watching Scooter, he came to the school with an important message about bullying prevention. Scooter said that bullying is wrong and that we need to end it. He taught us his ABCs to prevent bullying.

Here are Scooter's ABCs of Bullying Prevention:

A
A is for action. Take action if you are being bullied or you see someone being bullied. Go immediately to an adult who will help.

B

B is for bravery. Be brave when faced with a bully.

C

C is for compassion. Show concern for others. Be a friend and help one another.

What did you learn from Scooter?

What did you enjoy most about the assembly?

  1. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

I think that Scooter had a great message. I really enjoyed that Scooter was nice enough to show us tricks and put his video on the blog. My favorite trick is when he spins the ball on his finger under his legs. I also hope I win the tickets that Mrs. Hibler will give out. Overall, I loved watching Scooter. Did You?

  2. Dear Mrs. Y♥llis and Scooter,

That video was delightful to me! The ABCs was so funny! A kindergartner went up and just walked to a teacher and Scooter was right behind him and bullied her on purpose so we can see how it looked like. He told the school not to be involved in a fight. Scooter announced that practice makes perfect, but in class Collin told us it is not true because if you practice wrong it will be no use. So he came up with "Perfect practice makes perfect." The hardest move he ever did was spinning the ball on his nose, then balancing it back on his head. He also announced to never give up and do your best on every thing.(He did his best on basket ball). What was your hardest thing you ever did and never gave up? Mine was when I did a test for piano to go to the second level. I first thought I wasn't going to pass, but sometimes what you think is what is going to happen so I changed my mind to think that I am going to pass. Guess what? I really passed.

  3. Hi Mrs. Yollis's Class!

I am so excited you got to enjoy meeting Scooter from the Harlem Globetrotters! And what a wonderful message about bully prevention!

My class got to meet TNT and Big Easy last year. We rode in a hot air balloon with them. It was very exciting! I've never met Scooter, but I'm sure he was just as nice and talented as TNT and Big Easy!

    Thank you for sharing!

  5. Dear Mrs Yollis,
It must of been fun to wath. It was fun dor me to watch even though I wasn't there on that day. Scooter looks very talented and I bet all of the other members in that talented basketball team are to.

I loved watching the video it was very intresting to watch. And I bet the rest of 4KM and 4KJ did as well. Mrs Morris put it on the iintravtive white board (IWB)Scooter must have a lot of practice because I would never be able to do what he did I carn't even spin a basketball on my finger for one finger.

The A,B,C is a very clever way to stop bulling. Bulling doesn't just happen in school it also happends outside of school so that's why we have to stop bullying while we are still at school. So if we get bully outside of school we know what to do.

Back to talking about Scooter. It must of been very exciting for you to meet t
Scooter. Seeing a famous person in person is an amazing expirence to have and keep. This year we had a visitors from the Geelong Football Club. The players that came to see us was Andrew Mackie and Jed Brews. They tought us how to play real football.

Teachers try and teach you not to start a fight when you get angry with a person. Teacher tell kids that at schools all over the world and it stills happends all over the world.

I learnt that practise makes prefect. Even though I wasn't there I liked how Scooter spinned the basketball on his nose. And how he tought little kids to try and be brave when they get bullyed.

  7. Dear Mrs Yollis and class,

This is wonderful you had such a wonderful visitor taking about bullying.

I really feel he would have made a real statement by visiting your school.

Here in Australia just about everyone knows who the Harlem Globetrotters are. I am pretty sure they have visited Australia at some point. I am pretty sure when they did visit they came to promote basket ball.

  8. Dear Mrs. Yollis and class,

I can remember once seeing a performance of the incredible players in the Harlem Globetrotters. It seems to me Scooter has skills not only in basketball but in life.

Scooter's ABC guide is a lesson for us all to speak out against bullying whether we are the targets or see someone else being targeted.

    Dear Mrs. Yollis,

I took Collin to see the Globetrotters 2 years ago and we had a fabulous time. There was one really funny part in the game. One of the Globetrotters pulled down the other teams pants during a free throw. I was really funny and made my day. I look forward to taking Collin again sometime soon. Why do you think he pulled down his pants?

    Sincerely,
    Mark ( Collin's dad)

    1. Dear Mark,

I have also been to a Harlem Globtrotters game. What was your favorite part of the game you saw? When I went, I liked that they did not want to score; they just wanted to make the other team mad.:/ Are you going to the next game?

I think he pulled down his pants to entertain everyone in the audience.

      Sincerely,
      Abbey

    Dear Mrs. Yollis,
My name is Sean. I am Mallory's brother and a six- year -old first grader. This is my first comment. I am very exited!

I once played basketball like Scooter. Well, I don't know how to do the tricks like he did. My team's name was the Bulls. Our team color was red.

I think Scooter was awesome. My favorite part was when he picked the people to do the tricks with him. What was your favorite part? Did you think he was awesome? I did!

    Your very new blogger,
    Sean

  11. Dear Mrs. Yollis and class,

I have been fortunate enough to see the Harlem Globetrotters play on two separate occasions and had a great experience each time. I enjoyed the fact that I was entertained by both their basketball playing ability and their funny antics. I have always enjoyed playing in a game of basketball or just shooting hoops, but I wish I had Scooter's ability to handle the ball so well. He must practice very hard and put lots of effort into his sport. Do any of you have a sport you love to play?

I am happy to learn that when Scooter visited your school he also brought with him a message against bullying. I have learned that to make friends you must be a friend, and Scooter's message about speaking up when someone is being targeted is an important one. In helping to prevent bullying you are helping another person, yourself and the bully. You may find a new friend and the bully may realize it's better to gain friends rather than lose them. In any case, it is a good step to take to prevent bullying. Have you thought about what you might say or do if you see someone being bullied? Sometimes it helps to think about these things so that you feel prepared if you or someone else is being targeted.

I commend your school for inviting such an entertaining person to come to show you his basketball skills as well as presenting a valuable lesson for all who was lucky enough to be there.

    Sincerely,
    Jim-Collin's grandpa

    1. Dear Grandpa,

Thanks for participating in Family Blogging Month. I appreciate it so much! I never knew you have seen the Globetrotters. What was your favorite part of the game? You asked me what my favorite sport is. Collin's is playing basketball and Parsa's is basketball. I guess we should have said, "We both like playing basketball."

      Sincerely,
      C♣llin and P♣rsa
