Back to School Night

Normally Mrs. Yollis' class looks like this.

Tonight, Mrs. Yollis' class looked like this!

It was Back to School Night!

Parents came to hear about third grade!

Mrs. Yollis shared her website, where
homeworkspelling words, parent information, and learning games
can be found.

Parents viewed the reading video about how to choose the right book. They also learned about searching for a Reading Counts book.

Parents  learned all about educational blogging by watching our student-created
Blogging is Learning video!

What are you excited to learn about this year?

What did your parents think of your organized desk?
Parents, how is third grade different from when you were in school?

  1. Dear Mrs Yollis,

I really like this concept of having a parents night at school.

For here in Australia we don't have this kind of format and I really feel it would be wonderful if we did.

However in saying that we do receive a news letters/emails informing us parents what is happening each term.

Must say when I went to school it really was a matter of showing up for school. We did do some reading, spelling and maths. Some how I would love to be back school today as the children appear to be learning so much more and I just love it.

    From your pal,
    AA.

  2. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

It was great to be in your classroom for back to school night. I'm excited for your students to learn how to type on the Alphasmart keyboards. Sasha is looking forward to typing some of her homework! School was very different for me when I was in third grade. Personal computers did not exist. How wonderful it is that our kids have these tools available to them. Our family is looking forward to a year filled with learning new things.

    Sincerely,

    Joy

  3. Hello Mrs Yollis,

I am really excited about Jake's 3rd grade experience with you! I thoroughly enjoyed BTSN, and feel that learning thru blogging is such a fabulous way to keep kids excited about learning and invested in their education.
Thank you for your time tonight, and I look forward to this school year.

    Cheerio!
    Lisa (Jake's mum)

P.S. Jake inhaled the Caramello Koala; Cadbury's is one of our favorites!!

  5. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

My name is Kareen and I'm Aidan's Mom. My husband Josh and I really enjoyed learning more about your class this evening, and we are so excited about what this year will bring to him.

We remember having international pen pals when we were in 3rd grade, sending letters and waiting what seemed like forever for a response. It is so amazing the way you are using the internet to truly connect the kids and make them pals, rather than just pen pals.

Thank you for exposing our children to the world, and we look forward to an amazing school year.

    Sincerely,
    Kareen and Josh

  6. Dear Mrs. Yollis' class,

Mrs. Yollis has a great year planned for you guys. Although I enjoyed third grade, I would have loved to have blogged and skyped. I remember learning about how to use the card catalog at the library. Now card catalogs are considered antiques ☺.

    Have a great week!

    Sincerely,

    Tara Mettler (R♔yce's mom)

    @ AA, (Australian parent)

Thanks so much for the lovely comment. Back to School Night is an annual event here in the United States. It gives parents a chance to come into the room and spend some time with the teacher. They get an idea of what the year will be like and can ask questions.

I agree with you! I would like to be a student today. Such learning opportunities through technology. Amazing!

    @ Joy, (Sasha's mom)

Thanks for visiting and for leaving a quality comment! Yes, personal computers have brought big changes to schools! Looking forward to a great year!

    @ Lisa, (Jake's mom)

Thanks for your kind words and for taking the time to comment! Parents are a big part of our learning community and I'm glad you are joining in!

    @ Lauren (Jordyn's mom)

I'm glad you enjoyed Back to School Night. It is always a pleasure to meet everyone! I'm looking forward to a great year too!

    @ Kareen, (Aidan's mom)

How nice to have both of you in attendance tonight. Thank you!

Yes, pen pals were a part of my elementary school experience too. However, it did take forever to receive a reply. Now, contact is instant! Thanks again, for your kind words!

    @ Tara, (Royce's mom)

I appreciate your thoughtful comment! I remember the card catalog as well! Most of the books in our library still have the envelope for the card!

Thanks for volunteering to be one of the room moms! We appreciate your time! Thank you, too, for the lovely bromeliad. That was a wonderful gift to honor my award. :-)

    @ Ethan, (former student!)

I am so happy that you visited and left a comment! I hope you'll come back often! Yes, I was able to magically turn the children into adults! Ha Ha! How is your new class?

    @ ♥Natasha♥, (Mia's mom)

Welcome to the blog! I see you are already using some HTML code to fancy up your comments! Well done! We're going to have a great year!

    Sincerely,
    Mrs. Y♥llis

  14. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

I love the pictures of our parents in our seats! I think they are very funny! Thank you for allowing them to write on our desks. I loved my mom's note written on the desk and also the one she wrote on the card.

My mom really liked that I have an organized desk. She had told me when school started to keep my desk very neat so that I could find everything easily. She got her wish!

This year, I am excited to learn more about measurements and of course blogging!

How is third grade different from when you were in school?

    Best regards,
    Leila♥

  15. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

Thank you for yet another wonderful Back To School Night! Hard to believe that it's been a year since I sat in your classroom for Hannah's Back to School Night!

As I was sitting in the classroom listening to your presentation, I was genuinely moved by your remarkable enthusiasm and love for teaching. I truly feel blessed to have Leila in your class and she is thrilled to have you as her teacher. I know that she will benefit from all the incredible learning opportunities that you will create for her this coming year.

When I was in third grade, we certainly did not have any of the technology that is available to our children today. There were no computers, white boards or ELMOs. Those were the days of chalkboards!

    Sincerely,
    Marsha

  17. Dear Mrs Yollis and Grade 3
We imagine your parents found it quite amusing to be sitting at little desks for the evening!

We don't run a Back to School Night at our school in New Zealand, but we do have goal-setting conferences with parents and their children during the 1st term each year.

We wonder what Mrs Yollis stood on to take the photos?

  18. Mrs. Yollis,
It was a pleasure to meet you and visit the classroom during back to school night. This year will be a great learning experience for Brenden and I. He already knows more about computers and blogging than I do. I hope you don't mind one more student. I'm excited to learn along with the kids.

  20. Dear Mr. Avery

My name is Sarah and I am in Mrs Yollis class.W here do you teach at and what grade do you teach?

Did you notice that our parents were sitting at our desk. It was really funny when I saw my dad sitting in my seat and I am really surprised that he could fit.

Every year we get to make a tower with tissue paper and paper towels. The fun part was that it kept falling down.

  21. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

it was wonderful to meet you during back to school night and it was even better to be part of yesterday's award ceremony. Nobody could be more happy than Kelly to have you as her teacher and I share her enthusiasm. We are the lucky ones :0)

I am specifically looking forward to communicate with people all over the world and to exploring daily life in different communities. I grew up in Germany and one of my favorite school memories is meeting exchange students from the US and England.

Kelly's cousins attend universities in Germany and can hopefully share some of their experiences with our blog.

    To an extraordinary school year!

    Alles Liebe (much love)

  24. I just love it when a new post is on my blog roll. It is such a fun blog to read. I must be your biggest fan from Tanzania!

I went back a few days and revisited your back to school night post. It is such a fun idea, and I bet the kids get a kick out of seeing their families in their desks. I will have to remember this for next year! Keep up the good work and let us know how the Vegemite tastes!
