  1. Dear Mrs Yollis and your new Grade 3 class,

I know the new Grade 3 students don't start for a few more days, but I just have to say how excited we will be to meet our new blogging buddies.

The children in B4 look forward to sharing lots of learning experiences with you now that you are in Mrs Yollis' class.

B4 has Year 1/2/3 children in it. Our youngest Year 1 has only just turned 6 and our oldest Year 3 turns 8 in December.
I guess in Grade 3 many of you are 8 and will turn 9?

I know you will have a wonderful year with Mrs Yollis.

What book did you bring with you to read on the first day?

from Mrs M♔Kenzie and the B4 students

It would be such a special treat to continue to learn both from you and your new class.

    @ Mrs M♔Kenzie and the B4 students,
    (New Zealand!)

Thanks so much for being our very first comment for our new school year! We look forward to making lots of connections with all of you! Yes, most of the students start the year as eight-year-olds and turn nine.

Hopefully some of my students will share about the book they brought on our first day. Our first day is tomorrow, August 24.

    @ Mrs. Jacobs, (Hawaii)

Aloha to you! I want to personally thank you for all the support you give to our class blog and to the individual student blogs. Mahalo!

I'm curious, what does "A hui hou" mean in Hawaiian?

    Sincerely,
    Mrs. Y♥llis

  4. Dear Mrs. Yollis' class,

I am one of your new third graders. I am incredibly excited to be in your class. I am really looking forward to learning new skills. I also had a blog when I was in first grade and it was interesting. I am looking forward to tomorrow because it will be an amazing, interesting day.

The most amazing activity I did over summer break was when I went to the Statue of Liberty with my family. It was my first time there so I absolutely loved it!

    Sincerely,

  5. Dear Mrs Yollis and new students,

You guys are so lucky to have Mrs Yollis as your teacher. You are going to have a wonderful year!

Our names are Mrs Morris and Miss Jordan.

We teach 43 grade two students at Leopold Primary School in Geelong, Victoria, Australia.

Our class is called 2KM and 2KJ, and we write the 2KM and 2KJ blog

Mrs Morris first met Mrs Yollis through blogging in 2009 so you are actually the fourth group of Mrs Yollis' students that we have been blogging buddies with!

We can't wait to get to know you all.

We hope you all had a wonderful summer. Because we are in the southern hemisphere it is winter here. We have our summer holidays in December/January.

    Your new blogging buddies,
    Mrs Morris and Miss Jordan.

    @ Royce,

Welcome to my class! :-) I am very proud of you for being the first student to leave a comment! Not only were you the first, but it is an outstanding comment!

I like how you introduced yourself and told me that you had a blog in first grade. Based on that clue, I am going to guess that you were in Mrs. Levy's class. Am I correct? :-)

I also like that you shared something specific you did over the summer. Extra points to you, Royce, for capitalizing the Statue of Liberty. It's a proper noun, so good for you!

I'm looking forward to meeting you in person tomorrow!

    Your new teacher,

  7. @ Mrs Yollis,

Great post. Hi my name is Alana and I'm in 2KM in Australia. The school I'm in is Leopold Primary
School. We have an open door classroom. The open door classroom has two classroom and two grades called 2KM and 2KJ.

We are in the southern hemisphere. Right now it's winter and nearly spring. Yay!

Some things that I've been up to are:
    1. I've been at school doing lots of work. Yay!
    2. I've been practicing netball with my sister
    3. Watching T.V and lots more.

I think 2KM and 2KJ will be pretty good role models for you. When 2KM and 2KJ have new people in the class next year you will be role models for them.

    Best Wishes,
    Alana (2KM Australia)

We look forward to lots of fun and learning connections this year! Your students have been blogging since February, so they can be good teachers for us!

  13. Dear Mrs. Yollis' Class,

Welcome to third grade! You are so lucky to have Mrs. Yollis for a teacher. I know you are going to have lots of fun together and learn many incredible new things.

My name is Mr. Salsich and I teach third grade on the opposite side of the country in Connecticut. Mrs. Yollis and I do lots of projects together, so you will get to know me and my new students very soon!

This summer I spent a lot of time at the beach near my house. I love to go in the afternoon when the sun isn't as strong and the beach is less crowded. My favorite thing to do at the beach is ride the waves by bodysurfing. If the surf isn't big enough I go for long walks, read a good book, and listen to the waves crash.

I am so excited to get to know all of you and introduce my students to your fantastic blog.

Have a great first week of school!

    From,
    Mr. Salsich

It's true that you live on the Atlantic Ocean side of our country and we live on the Pacific coast, but we have a lot in common. I look forward to getting our classes together soon so we can share and compare! When do you start classes?

Your summer beach time sounds fantastic! I love being out with nature as well, especially at the ocean. There something magical about it!

Enjoy the rest of your time off, and we'll see you when you start with your third grade class.

  15. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

I am so excited to be in your class! As you know, my sister Hannah was in you class last year, and she had an amazing experience. I am sure mine will be the same.

Over the summer break, I went camping at Malibu Creek Park with my family and fifty of our friends! I also went to San Diego for a short vacation with my family.

When I wasn't on vacation, I spent a lot of time at the beach, Hurricane Harbor, and our pool with my family and friends!

It sounded like you had a great time in Hawaii! What was your favorite activity?

Hannah will also be helpful to the class as a senior blogger...I hope. :-)

Did I read your comment correctly. You went camping with fifty people? Wow! Was it a Girl Scout group outing?

What is Hurricane Harbor? I'm not familiar with that?

I did have a lovely time in Hawaii. Thank you for mentioning that. My favorite activity was snorkeling with the beautiful tropical fish!

It sounds like you had an amazing summer. Happy belated 50th birthday. I hope one day I will get to swim with sea turtles in Hawaii. It has been five years since my family and I went to the island of Kauai. I really enjoyed watching your snorkeling video. Two fun things that I did over the summer were, being a flower girl for my aunt's wedding on Catalina Island and camping for a week in Yosemite. Have you ever been to Catalina Island or Yosemite? It was my first time to Catalina and my third time to Yosemite. I can't wait to tell you all about it.

Your 50-person camp out sounds like a lot of fun! There must have been a tremendous amount of tents! How many do you think you had? I was thinking that maybe 2-4 people fit in a tent...am I correct?

I've never been to Hurricane Harbor. How many pools are there? Is it a big slide?

    @ Ellie,

Welcome to third grade! I am very impressed with your comment. You included a lot of detail sentences and that made your writing more interesting. Great work!

    @ Kelly,

I had a terrific day with all of you! We are going to have a great year together! Yes, definitely tell your relatives in Germany about our blog. We'd love to hear from them!

    @ Sammy,

Welcome to the blog! I'm glad you are joining in! I have been to Lake Tahoe before, but it was during the winter so I did not go in it. How was the paddle boarding? Do you have any tips you can share?

    @ Leila♥,

You are a super-blogger! We have been having a wonderful conversation here in the comment section! Thanks for answering my question about the tents. That must have been quite a trip!

Yes, I have been to a water park before, but not Hurricane Harbor. I don't think I've been to a water park in...decades! Do you think I would like it? Why or why not?

    @ ♔Miriam♔,

How nice to hear from one of my former students! I met a terrific girl today, and I'd love for you to meet her. Her name is Sarah, and she is an excellent student! :-) Maybe you already know her!

You are going to love Mrs. Krauss! I've known her for years and she knows a lot about our state. Maybe you can do some blog posts about what you are learning in class? :-)

    @ Jaden,

So nice to hear from you too! What a super comment! Lots of excellent observations and great detail sentences. I will have to share this with my new bloggers tomorrow! Wow!

I'm glad to hear that you are having a good time in fourth grade. Mrs. Kaplan is a terrific teacher and you will learn a lot from her.

Yes, we did play a little Speed Ball today, and they all seem to enjoy it. A few people got knocked out because they...weren't so silent!

We have 24 students in our class this year, one more than last year. Hopefully we will be able to start AlphaSmarts this week. Glad to hear that you typed the entire thing without looking. Typing is a skill you will use all of your life.

Let me know when you publish another post...I'll Tweet it out for you!

    Your pal,
    Mrs. Y♥llis

    @ Mr. Chamberlain, (Missouri)

YOU are correct! Let's get this blogging party started! Glad to to have you at the celebration!

    @ Mrs. Levy,

Welcome back to you too! Thanks so much for introducing blogging to these kids when they were in your first grade class. As you can see, it really paid off! Looking forward to connecting with your class again this year!

Like you, I had a fantastic time in Hawaii. It is such a beautiful place, and I hope to be back many times in m life! Maybe I'm part fish...I mean, I couldn't get enough of that snorkeling! :-)

    @ Matthew,

Welcome to the blog! I'm so glad that you took the time to write a comment. Yes, Ben and Emily are great friends of mine, and I hope they stop by occasionally and leave a comment!

You gave some nice detail sentences about what you did this summer. I can't believe that you rode your bike to the top of Mammoth Mountain! How long did it take you?

You mentioned, Never Eat Soggy Waffles! What did you mean by that? :-)

    @ Rexon,

Welcome to the blog! I can tell by your comment that you are a very observant person. You are correct, I am kid-loving! Your vocabulary impresses me! I noticed that you compared your current age to a decade. Very clever! Thanks for wishing me a belated birthday.

    Sincerely,
    Mrs. Y♥llis

What a terrific introduction you gave. Yes, I know your good friends Matthew and Logan. Guess what? Both of those kids have already left comments! Maybe you can teach them some HTML tricks!

Let me know when you publish another post. I'll be sure and tweet it out for you!

  50. @ Mrs. Yollis,

Thank you for commenting back to me! I have a new post. It is about last spring break because I never had time to publish it.

In the following paragraphs I am going to tell you what I did for my summer break. I hope that you enjoy reading about them.

First, I went to a camp that has just about everything. They make the counselers have fake names. Mine were Ice and Fish. It was my fourth year at that camp. My favorite activity was the Go-Carts.

Second, I went to a sports camp. The counselers did not have fake names. Mine were Ben and Tyler. My favorite thing to do was basketball.

Third, I went to another Sports camp. On one of the days I went the had a game truck. That was one of my favorite activities, but my other one was dodgeball.

Next, I went to a basketball camp. A bunch of my friends were there! On the first day we picked teams that we would be with for the whole week. A former NBA player was there!

After that, I went to an MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) Camp. On my first day, a former UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) Fighter was there! His name was Bas Rutten. Their was also swimming!

Finnaly, My grandparents came all the way from New York! We went to Disneyland on my birthday. My favorite ride was Toy Story Mania. We saw the World of Color!

All in all, I had a great summer and I hope you and your class did too!

    Your former student,
    Jaden

    @ Jaden,

Wow! That was one impressive paragraph. I believe, you used the Step-Up to Writing format for that gem! I love how you used transitions like next, after that, finally, and all in all. It really helped me follow your thoughts!

I think it is unusual that your camp counselors had funny names. Did they make the campers have funny names too? Of all of your adventures which was your favorite and why?

How nice to have your grandparents come out for a visit! I haven't been to Disneyland in a long time. What is World of Color?

I had a fabulous summer too. Check out my three videos in the archive! One is about Turtle Time, one is a video of some moray eels, and the last one is a movie with all kinds of tropical fish! Check them out!

    Your proud former teacher,
    Mrs. Y♥llis

  55. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

Thank you for your lovely compliment!

I do think that you would like Hurricane Harbor. I can tell by watching your Snorkel With Mrs. Yollis video that you love water activities. Hurricane Harbor has something to offer to everyone. If you like fast and scary, you can go on the tall and exciting rides. If you like slow and relaxing, you can go in the lazy river. I personally like the tall and scary ones.

Which one do you think you would like?

    Sincerely,
    Leila

    Brenden

  59. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

I'm glad that you noticed that I used Step-Up to Writing on that comment! Hopefully, some of your new students will be doing that by the end of the year.

No, they do not make students have funny names, but when you are eleven or twelve they have a program called CILT(Counseler In Leadership Training) and they do have funny names. My favorite adventure was the basketball camp because on the last day they had a game with the former NBA player, a couple of rookies, a college player and the coaches.

The World of Color is a show where water squirts up and makes images from Disney Movies. I've seen it four or five times!

I watched the videos about the turtles that Mr. Yollis took. It was amazing!

    Your former student,
    Jaden

Thank you for responding to me. You asked me who the former NBA player was. It was Byron Russell.

Are you hoping that you will earn a blog?

  65. Dear Mrs. Yollis,
last night I went to a Taylor Swift concert. Taylor is a famous country singer.
    It was so awesome!
She has a beautiful voice and a very sweet personality.
Taylor walked all the way around Staples Center to greet fans and when she reached our section, she gave me her guitar pick! I won't ever forget this moment.
Have you been to to a concert?

  66. Mrs. Yollis and class,
Welcome back to school. We started school on August 25th. We are a group of second graders new to blogging but our teacher did it last year in March with her old class who are now in third grade. We are excited to learn about others and do some of the neat things they did. We are in Monroe, North Carolina at Rocky River Elementary School. Happy Birthday. You had a lot of summer fun. We are called the Roadrunners (school mascot).

  69. Dear Mrs. Yollis' class,

My name is Alexandra and I am one of your new 3rd graders. I am excited to be in your class! I have heard that you are a great teacher. This year has been a big change because we just moved to the area, and I am not used to attending such a big school. You and the other students have made it easier for me. I also think blogging is a great way to make new friends. I was wondering how long it took you to make your blog?

    From,
    Alexandra

  72. Dear Mrs. Yollis and the new 3rd grade students,
I was asked if I might say a few words to the new classroom about dental health and how important a beautiful and healthy smile is for your body. I saw Miss Kelly the other day and I cleaned her teeth. We were talking about plaque/ bacteria and what it can do to your teeth if it's not cleaned away everyday. I hope that everyone in the classroom has had the opportunity to see their dental hygienist, to get their cleaning and check-up, at the dentist office. Smiles. Kirsten
