Do you know any karate? If so, what belt are you?

Which was your favorite combination?

  1. Dear Hannah,

WOW! You are one impressive Karate student! You knocked me out with the combinations you demonstrated with your teacher! Ha Ha!

I was surprised at how high and powerful your kicks were. How long have you been studying? My jaw dropped when I saw you break the boards...not only with your hand, but also with your foot. You are amazing!

I have a few questions for you:

What do you call a Karate teacher?
What do you call a Karate studio?

    Thanks for a POWERFUL demonstration!

    Your proud teacher,
    Mrs. Y♥llis

P.S. Congratulations to your mother for her fabulous video skills! Her hard work really paid off! Good job, Mom! :-)

  2. Dear Hannah,

You have great karate skills! We liked the part where you broke the board in half. We also liked it when you were doing self defense moves with your teacher.

Was it hard to break the board in half? When you first started karate did your karate teacher help you a lot and was it hard to learn everything? How many more belts do you have to earn to be a black belt?

I hope you write back to us soon.

    Your friends,
    Emily and Mikayla

  3. Dear Hannah,

What a wonderful display of you performing your Karate moves.I am so impressed.
I enjoyed your Karate combination with your teacher, well done.

Yes, I have done karate for about 8 months and I must say I do find it very challenging at times.
The karate I do is called Kyokushin. What is your stlye of karate called?

I do have a belt but I'm only a white belt. I have to say my favourite combination which I enjoy doing in karate is called Kata.

Do you do Kata at your dojo?
Also Hannah what level can you achieve in karate?

Our hightest level is a black belt which I would love to achieve one day.

    Wonderful post Hannah!

    From your blogging buddy,
    AA.

  4. Dear Hannah,

That was AWESOME! What a great demonstration of your karate skills. I was so impressed with your kicks and your combinations. It is hard to pick a favorite part, but I really liked the self-defense demonstration at the end and also the last board break. You should be very proud of all your hard work.

I can't wait to share this with my students tomorrow. They are going to love it! How surprised they will be to see the kind, thoughtful Hannah we know from our book clubs smashing boards in half! Fantastic.

  5. Dear Hannah,

I'm so amazed! The power of your punches and kicks sounded so strong! I know that I would definitely hurt myself somehow if I tried to do that!

It looks like you've really hard on that for a long time. It's truly paid off! Keep up all of your hard work! :)

  6. Dear Mrs. Yollis' Class,
It is very hot here in Texas. The high today was in the 70's and it's winter! We have a class pet. He is a green tree frog. We named him Mr. Hopper. We are going to blabberize him. I really like your class blog. Have you tried to blabberize? It is fun.
    Sincerely,
    Stephanie

  7. Dear Hannah,

I love your video! It's always fun to watch you do your punches and kicks.

As you know, I don't do karate. Maybe in the future, I'll change my mind and decide to do it.

My favorite part was when you broke the boards.

    Love,
    Leila

  8. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

Thank you for your wonderful comment! I like your play on words!

I have been doing Karate for a little over two years. I love doing it, I especially like breaking boards!

To answer your question, karate teachers are usually called senseis, but in our studio we call our teacher Master Nicky. A Karate studio is called a dojo.

    You student,
    Hannah

P.S. My mom says thank you!

  9. @ Mikayla and Emily,

Thank you for your kind compliment. I am glad you enjoyed my demonstration.

To answer your questions, it was not hard to break the boards in half because I have been practicing Karate for a long time. My Karate teacher has always helped me to learn my techniques and combinations. I am a brown belt right now, so I have to earn two more belts (red and senior red) before I earn my black belt.

I hope I wrote back to you fast enough!

    Your friend,
    Hannah

  10. Dear Hannah,
You did an awesome job with Master Nikki! I liked your roundhouse spinning back kick combination the best. I can't believe how high your kicks are!
I started at Master Nikki's dojo when I was five and have earned my red belt. I think Karate is a great sport becacuse it teaches you how to defend yourself and work hard.
    Good job on your video!
    Yours truly,

    Ben

  11. @ AA,

As always, it is very nice to hear from you. Thank you for your kind words.

It is great that you have started doing Karate. It's wonderful for your mind as well as your body. Just like you, I find it challenging at times. The Karate that I do is Mixed Martial Arts.

I had to look up what Kata means, and from what I understood I don't think we do that in my dojo.

In our dojo, I think the highest level you can achieve is 5th degree black belt because that is what our teachers are.

    Your blogging buddy,
    Hannah

  12. Dear Hannah,

WOW! What amazing techniques! If I didn't know better, I'd think you're a professional!

Yes, I do know karate. I started karate when I was four years old, and I enjoy learning from a five time world champion, Mr. Derrick, and a professional, Master Nicky.

I have senior red belt and hopefully, I will earn my black belt this year. Senior red belt, as you know, is one belt away from first degree black belt.

My favorite combination that you demonstrated was the double punch, roundhouse kick. Although my favorite combination is double punch, spinning hook kick, pop up roundhouse kick, and three-sixty tornado back fist, my second favorite is double punch, roundhouse kick.

What an incredible post! Keep up the amazing work!

    Your pal,
    Adia ;)

Thank you for your enthusiastic comment! I am glad that you like my video enough to share it with your students. I hope they enjoy it also!

Karate is a lot of hard work, but it is all worth it in the end because I always feel very proud of my achievements.

I have a question for you:

Do you know if any of your students do Karate?

    Your blogging buddy,
    Hannah

  14. Dear Hannah,

Wow! That was very cool! I don't do any karate so I have never seen karate. My favorite move you did was when you did the turn kick. That was really cool. I also like when you broke the boards in half.

    Have fun in karate!

  15. @ Mr. Avery,

Thank you for your thoughtful comment. Since I have been doing Karate for a while I know how to punch and kick without hurting myself. I am sure that if you also practiced Karate for a while that you would not hurt yourself either.

Is there a sport that you like to do?

    Sincerely,
    Hannah

  16. @ Ben,

Thank you for a wonderful comment. I also liked my roundhouse spinning back kick combination the best.

I have seen your kicks and I think yours are very high also. It's wonderful that you have earned your red belt, that's quite an achievement. I hope to earn mine by the end of February because that's when I will be testing for it.

I agree with you, Karate is a wonderful sport and it does teach you to defend yourself.

    My beautiful daughter Hannah,

What a fantastic Karate demonstration with Master Nicky! I have always felt that you are a natural at Karate but I have to say that I am more impressed than ever!

As you know, I practiced both Karate and Taekwondo when I was a child, so I know first hand the degree of difficulty of the moves that you perform in the video. Your kicks are high and you have wonderful form. You do your spinning back kick , which I always found very difficult, with so much speed and control.

I am so proud of the determination and focus that you demonstrate to achieve your goals.

    Much love,
    Your proud daddy

  18. Dear Hannah,

You are absolutely remarkable for a young girl to perform with such excellence! Karate is a special sport and as far as I can see you have mastered it! I think you may end up being a Karate teacher yourself!

Kudos! And a bright future, which I know you will have.

    Hannah joon,

Wow! What an incredible demonstration of Karate by you with your teacher! I am so blown away by the power of your punches and kicks. You also showed a lot of poise and control, you were amazing!

I really loved everything in the video but I especially enjoyed watching you break the boards . You are going to have to show me how to do that the next time I see you!:) I also really liked what you call the spinning back kick. I was really impressed with how you kept your balance and kicked the target.

I am very proud of you, I am going to show the video to all of my friends and colleagues!

  20. Dear Hannah,

I use to do karate, but I do not do it any more. The belt I had was a yellow belt. The hardest thing for me was stretching. We had to sit down and touch our toes without bending our knees. That was hard for me!

Have a question for you. What is your favorite colored belt?

    Nicole

"The kicking was great because it is really tricky to do," exclaimed Paige. "I have learned to do some kicking in karate."

"Hannah kicked the man and made him fall down," mentioned Matthew.

"She licked the wood and it broke," noticed Stevie.

"Where do you go to learn karate? asked Jonathon.

  22. Dear Hannah,

I love your fabulous Karate demonstration! I enjoyed watching the whole video but if I had to pick my favorite it would have to be the self defense portion.

Whoops! Stevie said that you kicked the wood, not licked it - even a black belt wouldn't have a tongue that strong!

Just like you I feel very lucky to have such great Karate masters as Mr. Derek and Master Nicky as my teachers.

One of my favorite combinations is the one that you mentioned in your comment, double punch, spinning hook kick, pop up roundhouse kick, and three-sixty tornado back fist.

  29. Dear Daddy,

I was so excited to see your comment! Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to watch my video and comment.

When I first started doing the spinning back kick, I had a very hard time doing it correctly. I had to practice a lot to master it. I guess, as with everything else, practice makes perfect!

Although, I have heard of Taekwondo and I knew that you practiced it as a child, I do not know much about it. Maybe one day you can show me some techniques.

    Love,
    Hannah

  31. Dear Khaleh Minoo,

Thank you for all your kind compliments! I am so happy you enjoyed watching the video.

I would love to show you how to break a broad but you have to promise not to do it on your own! You can hurt yourself! I was taught by my teachers the correct way of doing it so that I would not get hurt.

I hope your friends and colleagues (my mom told me the meaning of colleagues) enjoy the demonstration.

    Love,
    Hannah

Thank you for commenting. I didn't know that you had done Karate. Like you, I think stretching is very hard. We also have to touch our toes without bending our knees.

  33. Hi Hannah joon,

My goodness gracious, I absolutely, positively, loved your post. You know how much I love karate... it was truly a treat to watch it. Not only is Master Nicky your sensei, but he is mine in addition to Adia's sensei as well.

Your technique is magnificent. The execution of your movements were phenomenal. I'm very very very proud of you.

A few days ago I had a karate test and I earned my blue belt, which is 4 belts after the initial white belt. I had butterflies in my stomach and was very nervous.

It was our 100th belt test at the dojo, can you believe it? We celebrated this event by enjoying a gigantic cake, which was cut by Master Nicky with a long and sharp sword. It was so much fun. I wish you were there to celebrate with us.

My favorite combination that I saw you do was the spinning roundhouse kick. Also, I loved how you and Master Nicky were pretend fighting... really cool.

Also, your Mom, did a fabulous job filming. I'm so impressed with her. From this day forward you should grant her the privilege of being THE family camera man (to be politically correct, I meant camera woman).

Can't wait for your next post.

    Be blessed,
    Adia's blue belt Karate MAMA

  35. @ Mrs. McKenzie and class B4,

Thank you for watching my video and commenting.

Paige, I am glad that you like my kicking. I agree with you the kicking can be very tricky, but if you practice it becomes easier.

Matthew, the person I kicked was my Karate teacher, but I do it in a way that it doesn't hurt him.

Stevie, I practice a lot to break the board in the correct way, so I won't get hurt.

Jonathon, I go to a Karate studio near my house.

    Sincerely,
    Hannah

It might snow! I think you are very good at karate. Does it take a lot of practice to break a board? I have two shih tzus, four fish, and a lazy hermit crab. Do you have any pets? We had to give back Mr. Hopper. I hope we get another class pet soon.

  39. Dear Surya,

Thank you for your kind and thoughtful compliment. The self defense techniques that I demonstrated are taught to us so that we can defend ourselves against an even bigger opponent.

I am so happy to hear that you practice Karate. I am sure that you will be able to do the techniques I demonstrated if you continue.

I really like your idea about a teaching video, maybe I'll do one on my blog!

I am so happy that you earned your blue belt. That is a wonderful achievement. Adia must be so proud of you! I know what you mean about butterflies in your stomach, I always have them when I am testing!

It's so great that our dojo celebrated its 100th belt test. I wish I were there too, to join in the celebration.

I agree with you, I think my mom did a fabulous job with the video. As you know, she spent a lot of time on it. I think she is definitely our family's camera woman!

Thank you for commenting back to me. WOW, you are going to get snow! We have never gotten snow here in Los Angeles, I hope we get some one day.

To answer you question, it does take a lot of practice to break a board without hurting yourself.

I do have a pet, he is a 4 year old yellow labrador retriever, his name is Conner. If you would like to know more about him and see his picture, you can go to my blog Hannah's Hacienda.

  43. Dear Hannah,

I'm glad you think I wouldn't hurt myself if I practiced but I'm still not so sure!

I love all different sports. My favorite is golf though. There's nothing like getting out on the course on a nice, sunny day. Of course, right now, in Massachusetts, it's way too cold to do that. We have too much snow on the ground! I'm glad the groundhog saw his shadow! Maybe I'll be able to get out there and play soon!
